How to use water diligently?

Clean and safe drinking water has become very scarce. Today, nearly 1 billion people in the developing world do not have access to safe drinking water. But those who have access, take it for granted and tend to waste it.
So, here are some tips to use less water in homes and thereby save water for the future generations.

  • Water plants only when needed. Most plants need less water but at proper intervals. Know the watering requirements of your plant and use water accordingly. Adjust your watering schedule every month to accommodate seasonal changes.
  • Use water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucets in bathrooms. Take shorter showers and turn off the pipe after you wet your toothbrush. Avoid using water while gathering lather to wash your body and hair.
  • Use the dishwasher and laundry machines only when they have a full load. While washing utensils by hand, close the faucet when rinsing. Reuse the water from cooked or boiled vegetables as soup for a healthy way to start a meal and also save water.
  • Use cleaning liquids to mop the floor and wash basins. This will clean the surface quickly and consume less water.
  • Check for leakages in the pipelines regularly and keep them insulated.

By following these simple steps, you can save hundreds of litres of water every year and hence make safe and clean drinking water available for many generations to come.
